Vern A. Meek
According to oral history interviewee Fred Joseph Simpson, Meek was a farmer in Appleton who had a good piece of land about one-half mile from the Appleton School. On it, Meek at first raised a variety of crops, including strawberries, which Simpson helped harvest when he was a young man in the early Twentieth century. Later, Meek went to work for the Holly Sugar Factory in Grand Junction. By then, he was raising only sugar beets on his property.
