Caroline (Witt) Kiefer
-
She was a German Catholic immigrant to the United States. She married Dominick Kiefer, also a German Catholic immigrant, in Franklin, Indiana on July 28, 1845. They raised a family in Brookville, Indiana, and had at least nine children.
With her son Ben, she moved from Brookville to Fruita, Colorado in 1883, following her sons Joseph and Frank, who had purchased land in the area. Caroline Avenue in Fruita is named after her, and Kiefer Avenue is named for the Kiefer family. She also owned a homestead in the area of the Redlands that was once known as Fisher, near the Black Bridge from Orchard Mesa. She is buried in Fruita’s Sacred Heart Cemetery.
