David Lavender
A prominent author who wrote "One Man's West", which was about Montrose County, Colorado and the Paradox Valley area. He accompanied Andrew E. Riddle on a cattle driving trip. Riddle described Lavender as a man who did not want to be a cowboy, but was fascinated by the life of a cowboy. Lavender's's grandfather, Judge Garrigus of Greeley, wanted him to be an attorney and secured his admission to Princeton. At that time, Lavender was writing short stories and pulp novels under the pseudonym Ralph Catlin and made enough money to pay for his own education. After getting a degree from Princeton, he got a Master's Degree in Literature from Stanford University. When his stepfather Ed Lavender died, Lavender and his family liquidated their cattle ranch. Lavender then became the head of the English Department at a boy's school near Santa Barbara.
