Donald O'Rourke
"Donald Dean O'Rourke May 1, 1930 - March 31, 2008 Donald O'Rourke passed away on March 31, 2008. Born in Telluride, Colorado to Donald A. and Francis R. O'Rourke, he attended schools in Telluride and Gunnison, Colorado. Donald served in the United States Navy. He owned and operated the Telluride Electric Shop while working with Idarado Mining Company. In 1967 Gardner Denver hired Donald as Service Manager in Whittier, California; six years later he transferred to Mesa, Arizona as Mining Sales Representative. His last mining adventure took he and a lifetime friend to Venezuela in South America. After retiring to Grand Junction Donald spent many summers at his Trout Lake cabin near Telluride. His unbelievable skills in mountain jeep driving, Telluride history storytelling and wonderful personality placed him in a most fulfilling role. Don became a colorful figure as a jeep driver for tourists who visited the scenic Telluride area. Donald's achievements were many; he served as Chief of the Telluride Fire Department, San Miguel County Civil Defense Director and Exalted Ruler of Telluride Elks Lodge #692. But Donald considered his 51 year marriage and raising his two children the most rewarding achievement of all. Donald is survived by his wife, Darlene; his two children, John (Linda) and Doni of Grand Junction. Surviving also are three brothers, Gerald W. O'Rourke of Grand Junction; Richard M. O'Rourke of Pueblo; John L. O'Rourke of Centennial and one great aunt, Elizabeth Armerding of California and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Don in death are his parents, Donald A. and Francis R. O'Rourke and his sister, Patricia L. Kinman. As Donald requested, no services will be held. He was born in Gunnison, Colorado to immigrant parents from Ireland and Canada. He was a farmer and rancher. He met Gwendolyn (Peacock) McKee in Gunnison, Colorado. He married Gwendolyn (Peacock) McKee in 1927, but they later divorced.
