She was born in Edwards, Nebraska. As a child, she spent the school year in Fruitvale, Colorado and attended the Fruitvale School. Her father bought a ranch on Coates Creek, and she had fond memories of spending summers there and playing in the creek. She married James Brouse in 1937. Together they lived in Nevada, where he was a miner, and then returned to Mesa County, living first in Whitewater and then Grand Junction. She was a homemaker.

Ellie Caulkins

Eleanor “Ellie” Newman Caulkins was born 17 May 1937 in Orange, New Jersey to John Elliot and Mary Ingersoll Newman. She graduated from the Beard School and Bennett Junior College; additionally, she attended the University of Geneva. During a European ski trip, Ellie Newman met and married George Peck Caulkins, Jr. on 3 March 1962 in Zermatt, Switzerland … ten days after meeting.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Caulkins couple was very active in the fledgling community of Vail. In addition to participating in community ski races, local Baby Buggy Parades, fund-raising home kitchen tours, and potlucks, the Caulkins helped establish Vail Interfaith Chapel, Vail Valley Medical Center, and Vail ski mountain.
Ellie Caulkins lifelong love affair with opera began after raising her five children. She returned to college, enrolled in a life-changing elective entitled Opera as Literature, and graduated from the University of Colorado (CU Denver) in 1977. She is active regionally with Opera Colorado and nationally with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 2004, Caulkins was astonished to learn of her namesake … The Ellie Caulkins Opera House. In a surprise coordinated by son George Peck Caulkins III and Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, her husband, George, made a generous gift to the city of Denver in her honor.
In addition to a full family life, Ellie Caulkins has served on several Denver-based boards of directors. Ellie and George Caulkins were married forty-three years at the time of George’s passing in 2005. Children born to this union include daughter Mary I. Caulkins, and sons John N., David I., and Max O.B. Caulkins, as well as son George Peck Caulkins III.
