Elwood L. Brouse
He was born in Elkhart, Indiana. US Census records from 1900 show Elwood and his siblings living with their aunt and uncle, Albert and Maggie Seiss in Elkhart, where Ellwood worked as a farm laborer at the age of 15. Marriage records show that he married Edith M. Rawlings in Grand Junction, Colorado on December 24, 1906. The Brouses and their children lived for a time in Plateau City before Ellwood homesteaded in the Castle Rock area near Glade Park in 1914. He built a cabin and moved the family there in spring 1915. There, he was a dry farmer, but lost crops to lack of moisture. The family bought land in nearby Coates Creek and moved there around 1925. Around 1929, the family moved again, this time to Utah, just over the state line on Pinon Mesa. There the family stayed until the 1940’s, when they moved to Grand Junction.
