Emma Charlotte (Berg) Nagel
She was born in Nebraska to Frank A. Berg and Mary Berg, Swedish immigrants. They moved to a homestead in the Highpoint area north of Fruita, Colorado in 1894, just after the Panic of 1893. Emma was two years old. Her father planted fruit orchards. In addition to their fruit orchard, her family had dairy interests and delivered butter to various customers. Nagel also sold butter from a milk-products cart (25¢ per pound of butter or gallon of buttermilk). She paid for her schooling needs with her profits. She attended the Highpoint School and, most probably, Fruita Union High School, graduating in 1911. She became a school teacher in 1914, teaching first at the Escalante School, then in the Highberger School. She also taught at Pear Park School and elsewhere in the Grand Valley. She became the principal of Fruita Central School by 1919, prior to her marriage. During this time, she boarded with people in the community. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Fruita. She had two sons and three grandsons and lived in the same home from 1919.
