George Caulkins, Jr.
-
George Peck Caulkins, Jr. was born on 25 March 1921 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. His attendance at Yale University was interrupted by naval service during World War II. Lieutenant Caulkins served as a navigator aboard the Sims-class destroyer USS Wainwright; he saw action in both the Northern Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Postwar, Caulkins graduated from Yale University and earned his MBA at Harvard University. During a European ski trip, George Caulkins met and married Eleanor “Ellie” Newman on 3 March 1962 in Zermatt, Switzerland … ten days after their meeting.
George Caulkins, Jr. was one Vail’s six original founders and a member of Vail Corporation’s original board of directors. In the 1950s, Caulkins met Pete Seibert in Aspen. In 1960, Caulkins formed Caulkins Securities Corporation for the purpose of underwriting their brainchild, the Vail ski area. After a series of legendary fund-raising and promotional trips, Caulkins formed Gas Facilities, Inc. in 1962. Its purpose was to provide fuel and power to the Vail ski area infrastructure. (Gas Facilities was managed by Minturn miner and local historian, Pete Burnett.)
As evidenced by their induction into the 2016 Colorado Business Hall of Fame, the Caulkins couple had many business successes, as well as many noteworthy community and philanthropic endeavors. In a 2004 surprise coordinated by son George Peck Caulkins III and Denver mayor, John Hickenlooper, George Caulkins, Jr. pledged his love to his wife, Ellie, as well as a significant gift to the city of Denver, in the form of The Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
In 2013, George Caulkins, Jr. was inducted into the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. George and Ellie Caulkins were married forty-three years at the time of his passing on 24 March 2005 in Denver. In addition to son George Peck Caulkins III, four other children were born to their union: sons John N., David I. and Max O.B. Caulkins, and daughter Mary I. Caulkins.
