George Newbury
-
He was born in Pennsylvania to George and Olive Newbury. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. Wisconsin marriage records show that he married Martha Cordelia Webster in Jackson County on May 24, 1857, when he was about 25 years old. The 1860 US Census shows them living in Lathrop, Pennsylvania, with George working as a blacksmith. By 1870 they had moved to Melrose, Wisconsin.
They homesteaded in Mesa County, Colorado beginning in 1889. There, they planted orchards with apples, peaches, cherries, plums, and pears. The 1900 Census shows them living on Rhone Mesa.
According to his granddaughter Cordelia (Hamilton) Files, he was considered strange because he believed that there was life on other planets and that humans would someday travel to the moon. He died at the age of 82 and is buried in Fruita’s Elmwood Cemetery.
