Helen (Maharg) Martin
She was born in Iowa. She graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1929 and married fellow graduate Edward Martin. With Edward Martin, she co-owned Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction, Colorado, beginning in 1937. She was a mortician there. She was a member of the Sunshine Chapter No.53, Order of the Eastern Star. She was included in Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in American Women, and Who’s Who in Art and Antiquities. She was an artist, and a founder of the Western Colorado Center for the Arts. Helen Chaney
"Helen Chaney, 86, Montrose, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1992, of natural causes. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 29, p.m., at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Russian River Cemetery in Ukiah, Calif., with Montrose Valley Funeral Home handling the local arrangements. Helen Moureaux was born April 22, 1906 at Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of Alois and Marie (Schene) Moureaux. Her childhood was spent in Telluride where she graduated from high school. She then attended Barnes business School in Denver for two years. On Feb. 22, 1936 Miss Moureaux was married to Ralph Chaney at Yuma, Ariz. He preceded her in death in August of 1966. At the age of two she moved to Telluride from Philadelphia; after business school in Denver she moved to Delta for a short time before she went to California until 1985 when she returned to be close Lo her niece, Elaine Ayers. Mrs. Chaney was a retired bookkeeper for the State of California. She was a member of the Christian Church; lifetime member of the Eastern Star; and the Rebekah Lodge, all in California. Survivors include two nieces: Elaine Ayers, Montrose, and I-Alise Eckman, of Ukiah, Calif., a great niece, Vonda Moureaux, Lancaster, Calif.; four great nephews Ray Moureaux, of Telluride; Bobbie Ayers, Flagsaff, Ariz.; Dale Ayers, Montrose: and Steven Eckman, Ukiah, Cai!f.; a great-great niece, Jori Lynn Ayers, Flagstaff, Ariz.; and a great-great nephew, Jeremy Lynn Ayers, Montrose. Other survivors include three grandchildren: Kathy Cohn, of Sonoma. Calif., Terri and Noel Chaney of Courtenay, Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband a step son, William R. Chaney, and brother, Albert H. Moureaux, on Aug. 16, 1988. Mrs. Chaney enjoyed playing the organ, looked forward traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and friends." --Taken from an Obituary of unknown origin, found in the Telluride Room at the Wilkinson Public Library.
