He was born to a German farming family in Vidak, Russia, the youngest sibling of five children. Henry left Russia to avoid serving in the army before the Russian Revolution, and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to live with his sister in 1913, when he was 18 years old. There, they lived in a community of Germans from Russia. His parents, Pete Spomer and Mary Margaret (Georg) Spomer, refused to move and lived in Russia until their death. In Lincoln, Henry worked at an ice house for the railroad and eventually became a farm laborer, focusing on beets. He also met Marie Geier, whom he married. They later moved to Mesa County, Colorado with other Germans from Russia to raise beets in the Fruitvale area. US Census records show them living with five children in the Pomona area by 1930. He also worked on a farm for the Redlands Company, for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and as a janitor at the Lowell School before retiring at 67.
