Jack Eck, M.D.
-
Jack Eck, M.D. was raised in the Pocono Mountain community of Shavertown, Pennsylvania and was the first generation of his family who did not work in the regional coal mines. After undergraduate study at Muhlenberg College (Allentown PA), Eck graduated from medical school at Temple University (Philadelphia PA) in 1968. In 1968-1969, Dr. Eck performed his residency at Denver's Presbyterian Hospital; he also found time to ski in Vail. Subsequently, Jack Eck was a “Doctor Draft” earmark during the Vietnam War. He logged over 1000 hours as a Captain and chinook helicopter Flight Surgeon in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
Immediately after discharge from the army, Eck was hired by Vail’s first physician, the late Dr. Tom Steinberg. Armed with fond memories of his 1960s ski experiences in Vail, Eck headed west on 4 October 1971. No stranger to medical emergencies, the young Dr. Eck was sent to render assistance at a Gilman mine cave-in during his first week serving the isolated mountain communities surrounding Vail.
By the late 1970s, Jack Eck became the first medical advisor for the Vail Ski Patrol, as well as the first physician to serve on the patrol. Ultimately, Dr. Eck pioneered orthopedic and medical first responder techniques that were modeled by ski patrols throughout the U.S. and adopted by the U.S. Ski Team. During the 1989 and 1999 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships, Dr. Jack Eck served as the course Medical Director. In 2015, Eck was the Medical Committee Chairman during the FIS Alpine World Alpine Championships. In honor of his contributions to the history of skiing, Eck was inducted into the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2015.
In 2008, Eck was named Vail Valley Foundation (VVF) Citizen of the Year. VVF Life Trustee and Chairman Emeritus, Harry Frampton, has characterized Jack Eck as “visionary” and Eck’s role as a caring community leader is an important facet of his legacy. In 1980, Eck was instrumental in establishing the Vail Valley Medical Center (VVMC) cardiac program and VVMC’s first intensive-care unit (ICU). Eck was also helped found the Shaw Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art regional cancer facility, as well as Jack’s Place: A Cancer Caring House. Jack’s Place provides patients and their families with short-term, nominal-cost residence during oncological treatment. Dr. Jack Eck is married to Kathleen Sheehan Eck.
