He was born in Plateau City, Colorado, and moved to the Castle Rock area near Glade Park in 1915, when he was about 4 years old. There, his father homesteaded and dry farmed. The family moved again when they bought land near Coates Creek around 1925. James attended Coates Creek School on Glade Park from 1918 to 1927. He worked as a cowpuncher at a young age, and had many memories of growing up on Glade Park and of social life around the Mesa County area. The family moved just over the Utah state line on Pinon Mesa around 1929, and James lived with his parents until he married Ellen Teresa Morse on September 9, 1937. Together they lived in Nevada, where he was a miner. They returned to Western Colorado, living in Whitewater, on Glade Park, and in Grand Junction. He worked for the Mesa County Road Department from 1952 to 1975.
