Louis Merlin Cowden
He was born in Gypsum, Colorado to Jacob Cowden and Lillie M. (Sykes) Cowden. US Census records show Louis growing up in Garfield County, where his father was a coal miner in New Castle, a farmer on Divide Creek, and then the owner of a flour mill in Silt. His mother was a homemaker. He married Mabel Harp, a teacher, in Rifle on June 17, 1919, shortly after his service in World War I. With his wife, he owned and ran a general store in Silt.
