US Census records show Louis growing up in Garfield County, where his father was a coal miner in New Castle, a farmer on Divide Creek, and then the owner of a flour mill in Silt. His mother was a homemaker. He married Mabel Harp, a teacher, in Rifle on June 17, 1919, shortly after his service in World War I. With his wife, he owned and ran a general store in Silt.
