Lowell Edwin "Pete" Laycock
-
He was born in Delta, Colorado to Austin Wilburn Laycock and Minnie M. (Daizey) Laycock. His father ran an automotive garage and then a Star and Durant dealership in Delta and Grand Junction called the Laycock Motor Company. His mother was a homemaker. Lowell worked for the family business at the age of twelve, in 1929.
By 1934, he was driving a truck to Lansing, Michigan in order to haul new cars from the manufacturer to Grand Junction. Laycock Motor Company was one of the first dealerships to haul cars by truck to the point of sale.
The family moved to Grand Junction in 1935, following the relocation of their dealership there in 1924. During World War II, he went to the St. Louis School of Aeronautics as an instructor in aircraft engines. When he returned, he once again worked for the Laycock Motor Company. City directories list Wilbur Laycock as the owner and operator until 1957, with Lowell listed as a salesman at the dealership. Lowell took over the business in 1958 upon his father’s death and retired from the automobile trade in 1965, when the agency was sold to Jack Williams.
