<marmot:placeNotes>The area that now comprises the Colorado National Monument was explored by John Otto, a former miner, in the early Twentieth century. Otto broke several trails on the Monument, brought in elk and bison herds (both left the park), and served as the primary mouthpiece, promoter, and fundraiser for the area. With his persistence, the area west of Grand Junction and east of Fruita became a national monument in 1911, with Otto serving as the first park ranger for the monument.</marmot:placeNotes>
