Two creeks flow through the canyon, with East Creek and West Creek running opposite directions, separated by the Unaweep Divide. Unaweep Canyon was the location of several early ranches following the expulsion of the Ute people from Western Colorado in 1881. The road through Unaweep serves as the primary route to Gateway from Whitewater. At one time, the road through the canyon followed a different route. Coming into the canyon from the direction of Whitewater, the road ascended a hill called Nine Miles, and then followed a route that was often covered by extremely deep snow. The Gateway-Uravan Stage often had to use a horse-drawn sled to get through the canyon in the wintertime. The wagon used the ruts in the road when it was muddy. The canyon is the location of the locally-famed Hanging Flume, used for a brief time in a placer mining operation. It also the location of Driggs Mansion, former residence of New York attorney and aspiring cattle rancher Laurence La Tourette Driggs (and constructed in sandstone by stone masons Nunzio and Vincent Grasso of Grand Junction). yes yes
