<marmot:placeNotes>The first location of St. Mary's Hospital was at 1129 Colorado Avenue in Grand Junction, Colorado. According to Patricia Le Master, the first hospital was built on lots sold to the Sisters of Charity by Grand Junction Mayor Allison, at 11th Street and Colorado Avenue. The lots were purchased for $4500 in a two year mortgage at 8% interest. The architects Boyer and Leserbe drew plans for the hospital. Builder R.B. Currie was hired for the construction on February 26, 1896. Volunteers from the town dug the foundation and basement, and hauled stones from the river. The building opened on May 22, 1896. It included a vegetable garden, chickens and a cow to help with food expenses.

With the growth of the city, the sisters were forced to move their sleeping quarters to a small house built across the street for that purpose. The building was remodeled and an addition added in 1912. Due to overcrowding, it was abandoned for a new building in 1951.</marmot:placeNotes>
