Before the construction of the Franklin School, all grades attended Lowell School. Students from all over Mesa County attended the school until it was condemned in 1917 because of a crumbling foundation. A new high school, Grand Junction High School was built at 9th Street and Chipeta Avenue in 1911, but the transition to the new school was gradual. It had a large bell that rung to summon children to school.
