<marmot:placeNotes>Grand Junction's first high school. Before the construction of the Franklin School, all grades attended Lowell School. Students from all over Mesa County attended the school until it was condemned in 1917 because of a crumbling foundation. A new high school, Grand Junction High School was built at 9th Street and Chipeta Avenue in 1911, but the transition to the new school was gradual. It had a large bell that rung to summon children to school. When the school was condemned, the bell was removed and placed in a temporary wooden tower next to the Lowell School (which was in the same block).
