<marmot:placeNotes>Atchee, Colorado, now a ghost town, was a station stop on the Uintah Railway. According to Elizabeth Angus, who lived in Atchee, the town was named for the brother of Ute Indian leader Ouray.

In the 1920’s, the town had a hotel and a general store. Steam heat was supplied to many of the company houses. Water was piped by the railway from a spring.

When the Gilson Asphaltum Company found it was cheaper to truck gilsonite, it spelled the end for Atchee and other company towns along the Uintah. After 1939, many of the buildings in town were torn down and used for homes in Grand Junction. Angus contends that the residents moved primarily to Mesa County or California.</marmot:placeNotes>
