According to Edith (Burns) Strain, who moved with her family to Clifton by 1909, the town at that time consisted largely of orchards, although on or near Main Street it had a telephone office, a grocery store, a general store, and a butcher shop. A lumberyard was later established. Two medical doctors lived in Clifton, doctors Glendenning and Oyler. The Adventist church building was the first established in town, but people of other faiths also utilized the Adventist Church building. Soon after, in 1907, the Methodist Episcopal Church was built at 4th Street and Grand Avenue. In 1920, the Christian Church, which had been organized in 1910, built a church and community center at the intersection of F Road and Main Street.
