<marmot:placeNotes>A bridge connecting the downtown of Grand Junction with Orchard Mesa. It was the first bridge in the area that crossed the Colorado River, and the only such bridge until the Main Street Bridge was constructed in 1912. After the construction of the Black Bridge in 1891, which crossed the Gunnison River, citizens could get to the Redlands area from downtown by first crossing the Fifth Street Bridge and then crossing the Black Bridge. According to oral history interviewee James Brouse, whose father would load the family into a horse and carriage to cross the bridge in the 1910’s, “to go over the river bridge it was scary at that time because that old bridge was just bumps, you know… we were so scared by the time we’d start over that river bridge… it was a wobbly old bridge. It didn’t feel very safe to us.”</marmot:placeNotes>
