<marmot:placeNotes>A canyon, now within the confines of the McInnis Canyon National Conservation Area. According to oral history interviewee George Knowles, an early resident in the canyon, Horsethief Canyon received its name because it was the home of Heber Young, a "backslider" from the Mormon Church who lived there, and who was reputed to purchase horses that had been stolen from Mormons in Utah.

The canyon was once the home of the Horsethief Canyon Ranch. According to George Cecil Harper, who lived there as a child in the 1910's, the ranch was apparently started by a man named Herbert, who built a stone house there.

According to Gertrude Rader, the canyon had a sawmill. It also had a stone quarry that was used to supply some building materials for the Loma School. In the 1920 and later, it was the location of the Loma Community Club Annual Fish Fry.
