<marmot:placeNotes>The first City Market store was established by Adam Booker in 1922. Paul Prinster purchased part-ownership in the store from Booker in 1924. He shortly convinced his brothers Clarence, Frank and Leo to move from La Junta and invest in the company. The Prinsters, who had worked in their father’s meat market and grocery businesses in La Junta, became the sole owner/operators of the store.

The Prinster’s expanded the store, adding new meat cases. Leo did the store’s ordering and bookkeeping and had a cubbyhole above where he could watch the store. Leo and Clarence worked as checkers. The Prinsters built a small structure to house a boiler behind the building, which provided heat to City Market and to its neighbors, the Mesa Drug and the Red Trunk clothing store. Paul rendered lard in a shed behind the store and sold the lard within the store.

The Prinsters tired of paying so much money in rent and upkeep. In 1939, they opened a new store on 4th Street and Rood Avenue. With the advent of the new store, City Market moved its lard rendering to the Burns Packinghouse west of town, across the Main Street Bridge.</marmot:placeNotes>
