On March 14, 1883, de Beque first founded a settlement called Ravensbeque in De Beque Canyon, about four miles from the current town of De Beque. He built a log cabin there with his first wife, Marie Meyers, on July 5, 1884. The town of Ravensbeque was soon abandoned, possibly because of flooding from the Colorado River that frequented the canyon at that time. The new town of De Beque was founded soon after, and named in the honor of Wallace de Beque. He lived there for many years. De Beque was the center of the local ranching industry, with large shipments of cattle being sent to market in Denver from the De Beque stockyard and train station in the early Twentieth century.
