Whitewater School, Mesa County, Colorado Whitewater Mesa Colorado USA The first school, a one-room frame building, was built in 1886, and was administered by Whitewater School District 3 (formed in 1883). In 1907, a two-story frame school was built on the same site, and the old school building moved to Highway 50, where it was used as a residence. According to oral history interviewee Dorothy Tindall, the school also taught high school grades in its early years. It dropped high school courses when automobiles became more common, and students were able to attend Grand Junction High School. A fire burned down the school in 1950, but all seventeen students and the school records were saved. A one-story cinder block school was built on the same site in 1950. In 1951, Whitewater became part of School District 51. Area students continued to attend the Whitewater School until the Fall of 1959, when they were bused to Lincoln Orchard Mesa. *Some information in this history came from: Albert and Terry LaSalle.
