Now, Mesa County residents primarily identify it as a truck stop, but it was once a bustling mining enterprise and town. Cameo had a train stop. After 1910, the settlement also had a footbridge used to cross the Colorado River. Oral history interviewee Ann Stokes worked for the McNeal family who she recalls owned the Cameo Mine. They had a large mansion in Cameo that overlooked the Colorado River. The town, according to Stokes, had around 1,000 residents, presumably all people employed at the mine or relatives of workers. According to Frank Simonetti Sr., who worked at the mine in 1914, Cameo had thriving gambling and bootlegging enterprises. The town coordinated with Green River, Utah and Hogan Spring, Utah in the illicit alcohol business. yes yes
