<marmot:placeNotes>Downtown's Colorado Avenue was known locally as Barbary Coast (after the moniker more famously employed in San Francisco). Along with the streets immediately south, It was filled with saloons, gambling and prostitution from Grand Junction's founding until sometime in the 1930s.

According to oral history interviewee Glen McFall, he made frequent deliveries to the brothel at 240 Colorado Avenue, and the madam and prostitutes there were always very generous in payment (of money only). According to McFall and oral history interviewer Helen Hamlin, there were also four or five brothels on Colorado Avenue south of the location of Colscott’s store. In his oral history interview, Eugene Perry recounts the names of several of the madams and prostitutes that inhabited the Barbary Coast area: Kathryn Stone, Vanna, Broken Jaw Nell, Jean Harris, Alice, Mavis, and Frances. He also recalls the names of certain brothels, including the Mooreland Rooms.

When Basque immigrant Jean Urruty bought his first hotel on the avenue in 1935, he urged the police to clean up the vice flourishing on the street, but it wasn’t until he and other hotel owners began to buy up properties along the avenue that the brothels disappeared.</marmot:placeNotes>
