It was built in 1883. It is unclear if the city and county jails merged at this time, or if they operated as separate facilities. According to William McHarg Ela, who attended the Lowell School in its second location (at 310 N 7th Street) during the 1930's, the jail building sat on the school grounds. According to oral history interviewee Glenn McFall, the jail was next located at 6th Street and Colorado Avenue, next to the fire station. However, oral history interviewee Eugene Perry, who worked at the jail for four years as a maintenance man, says that the jail was once located between Pitkin and Ute Avenues on 6th Street. yes yes
