      <marmot:placeNotes>Purportedly, the mountains were a good source of salt, which would account for their name.  In his oral history interview, Andrew Riddle asserts that so many arrowheads can be found in the Uncompahgre area and elsewhere around the La Sal Mountains in part because Utes and previous American Indians came from far away to collect salt from the Dolores River where it passes the mountains.</marmot:placeNotes>
