The canyon is now designated as a Wilderness Study Area by the BLM. It covers over 15,096 acres across Utah and Colorado, with the majority being in Colorado. During the 1910s, in the area nearest Bedrock, Colorado, there was a boarding house owned by W.L. Cummings. Laura (Bristol) Foster and her first husband John "Peg-leg" Foster ran it until their divorce.
