<marmot:placeNotes>A dig on a knoll near Cottonwood Creek, Utah, in the Bookcliffs, that uncovered evidence of Fremont Indian inheritance and culture. The dig is located on the Al Turner Ranch, thirteen miles north of Cisco, Utah. In 1938, Turner reported to Look that he had found what he called “an Indian fort” on his property. Look and his son investigated the hill above, where arrowheads had been found. Al Look Jr. found a gopher hole on the side of the hill, where ashes were exposed.

After consulting with archaeologist Hannah Wormington, they put down test holes and located “peculiar pottery.” Look sent these to Wormington, the head of the archaeology department at the Colorado Museum of Natural History. Wormington led an excavation of the area from 1939-1948. According to the article, “A woman pushed early research into archaeological sites in region” in the June 4, 2018 edition of the Daily Sentinel, “Thousands of projectile points and bone fragments were discovered there, along with the remnants of nine structures and parts of five human skeletons, which were believed to be of the Fremont culture.” According to Al Look, the excavation found five circular houses with adobe fireplaces, a grave with a baby laid on the chest of a male, a sweat lodge, and artifacts that most probably originated on the north shore of the Great Salt Lake, in Arizona, and the Gulf of Mexico. There were rock slabs stood up on their sides on the top of the knoll, which Wormington hypothesized were part of a shelter, or possibly ceremonial.

In later years, vandals stole many of the artifacts located at the site.</marmot:placeNotes>
