It supports small and large-scale fruit growing, vineyards, and wineries. According to Ann (Reese) Stokes, whose family homesteaded there in 1904, irrigation did not come to East Orchard Mesa until about 1909. Stokes says that her father’s orchard was the first there before the canals came in. In order to get to Palisade from East Orchard Mesa, early residents used the footbridge over the Colorado River in town or had their horses and wagon taken across by the Palisade Ferry. They could also travel west to the Clifton Bridge, or all the way into Grand Junction, and then come back east into Palisade. yes yes
