<marmot:placeNotes>It was founded by the Colorado Cooperative Company as one of Colorado's utopian colonies in 1893. With the backing of Denver investors, colonists worked at setting up infrastructure necessary for a town, including a cooperatively run irrigation system, mill, hen house and newspaper. Lack of profitability, disagreements with the Denver stockholders, and infighting over the privatization of the town's irrigation project doomed Nucla as a cooperative, but it carries on as an incorporated municipality.</marmot:placeNotes>
