<marmot:placeNotes>A school in the Riverside neighborhood, also known as the Crawford Addition, that was located somewhere across the street and east of the second Riverside School (now Escuela DIA) on West Main Street. Teachers included Ada Copeland and Hope Taylor. The building was of frame construction and painted yellow. It consisted of two classrooms separated by a hallway. Students had individual desks with inkwells and flip-up seats where they could store books. In the 1910’s, it held the first and second grades. Each classroom had a wood stove, and there was a coal shed in the back part of the schoolyard. Blackboards were located at the front and sides of the classrooms. Hooks for coats and hats were located at the back of the room. Cox describes a set of “giant strides rings” in the back as the only playground equipment. The school had a handbell that was rung for recess and the beginning of school. Mesa County Oral History Project interviewee Frances Mendicelli attended the school beginning in 1907. The Crawford Addition was founded in 1882-4, and the school may have been built to serve the neighborhood's population in the late 1800's. It coexisted with the first Riverside School, which was located at 502 West Colorado Avenue. When the new Riverside School opened in 1918, the Bryant School and the first Riverside School closed.</marmot:placeNotes>
