<marmot:placeNotes>During the atomic energy boom after World War II, the old sugar manufacturing plant became a uranium mill. Workers processed the ore on site and then disposed of the mill tailings along the adjacent Colorado River. Mill tailings were also used in concrete for structures and sidewalks, and in fill dirt for various projects, including Sherwood Park. Beginning in the 1980's, long after the uranium mill had been shuttered, the federal clean up of uranium mill tailings cost taxpayers millions of dollars. The former uranium mill is now a storage site for the Museums of Western Colorado.</marmot:placeNotes>
