<marmot:placeNotes>The Midland Trail was one of the first transcontinental automobile roads in the United States. It ran from Washington D.C. to San Francisco and Los Angeles, and road signs were placed along the route in 1913.

In Colorado, it followed US 40 from Lamar to Denver and split into four different routes over four different mountain passes before converging on US 6 through Grand Junction. According to oral history interviewee Glenn McFall, the trail going east to west traveled past Cross Orchards (probably on the south side) to Johnson’s Corner, to Fruitvale Corner (at 30 Road and the eastern terminus of North Avenue), and up North Avenue to 7th Street in Grand Junction, presumably then following what is now Highway 6&50 to Utah.

The route west from Clifton to Palisade seems to have followed what locals now refer to as the old highway (Now Highway 6 as it travels along F Road and Front Street).

The later Ocean-to-Ocean Highway seems to have followed the same route through Mesa County, at least from Clifton through Palisade.
