Collbran School, Collbran, Colorado Collbran Mesa Colorado 81624 USA A school consisting of two buildings. It may have begun around the time of the formation of Collbran School District 6 in 1884. According to former teacher Loudene Humeston, it was initially a two-floor, four-room schoolhouse which held all 12 grades (right off Orchard Avenue). The School was administered by Collbran School District 6, which formed in 1884. By 1919, it had about 90 students. According to Cordelia (Hamilton) Files, who taught 3rd and 4th grade in the late 1910’s and early 1920’s, she had about 40 students in the two grades combined. Sarah Krugh taught first and second grades during that time. The building burned in 1929 due to friction from the mounted school bell having shaken loose some chimney bricks, allowing for the fire to reach the wood of the structure. The top floor was lost to the flames. The rebuilt schoolhouse was an entirely ground-level affair, and opened in March 1930. During the interim between the fire and the remodeled school's opening, children attended school in a local church. A later building (in use at least as late as 1980) was begun in 1957 and occupied by the school in 1960. yes yes
