<marmot:placeNotes>According to several oral history interviewees, including John Collier, the Poor Farm was located on the site of what had previously been the Mesa County Pest House. Mesa County, which had operated the Pest House, ceded the land to the City of Grand Junction, most probably after infectious outbreaks became rarer with progress in vaccines and water quality.

The Poor Farm probably began operation during the Great Depression. A large building was constructed on the site and it was mainly used for senior citizens. It is unknown if the building originally used as Mesa County's first hospital, and then as the pest house, was also utilized at this time, or if it was torn down (it was constructed in 1883).

Eventually, Mesa College bought the land around the Poor Farm and used it for animal husbandry and 4-H fairs.</marmot:placeNotes>
