<marmot:placeNotes>Grand Junction Junior High School was constructed after the passage of a school bond measure in 1925. Grand Junction School District 1 built the school in 1926, placing it on the west end of what was then the Grand Junction High School Campus. Junior high students had previously gone to school in the high school building. The two-story junior high building was made of brick. In 1956, a new Grand Junction High School was built, and the junior high school expanded into the old high school building while still using their previous building. By 1971, over 1,200 students attended the junior high, making it overcrowded. The former high school building was in poor condition. Instead of remodeling the buildings, East and West Junior High Schools (now middle schools) were constructed. The high school building was torn down, and the former junior high school building became Columbine Elementary School, housing students that had formerly gone to the Emerson and Lowell Schools. Columbine too was torn down with the construction of Chipeta Elementary School in the 2000’s.
