<marmot:placeNotes>The first automobile road through Glenwood Canyon was established in the early Twentieth century. It was a dirt and gravel road and made for rough passage. According to oral history interviewee Gladys Earnest, the state appropriated money to improve the two-lane road around 1918. Convicts initially provided labor and camped in tents along the Colorado River during construction, but they were unable to complete the project. In the 1930’s, US Representative Edward Taylor, who was from Glenwood Springs, obtained money for the road’s improvement. Beginning in 1938, the road was widened and paved. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the road became a four-lane highway and, as part of I-70, one of the gems of the Interstate highway system. The highway’s construction was known for using building techniques and design that protected the canyon’s ecosystem and beauty.</marmot:placeNotes>
