Central High School (first location), Mesa County, Colorado 1946 1956 North Avenue and 29 Road, Southwest corner Mesa Colorado USA place:1751 Fruitvale High School, Mesa County, Colorado In 1946, the Clifton, Fruitvale and Pear Park School Districts consolidated to form Central District 46. Clifton High School closed and students could choose Frutivale, Grand Junction, or Palisade High School to continue their educations. Most students selected Fruitvale, and in 1946 the name of the school was changed to Central High School. It occupied the same adobe, WPA building that Fruitvale High School had occupied, on North Avenue at 29 Road on the southwest corner. The school’s name derived from its location as a central point along the old highway between Grand Junction and Palisade. When Fruitvale became Central, the school’s mascot changed from the Vikings to the Centralians. In 1947, students in a school assembly changed the mascot to the Warriors.
