<marmot:placeNotes>In 1925, the growth of Palisade made it necessary to construct a building dedicated to the instruction of high school students. Prior to that time, students of all grades had received their education at the Palisade School. The new Palisade High School was built at 8th Street and Iowa Avenue, on the same grounds as the Palisade School, which was located at 8th Street and Peach Avenue. A WPA-built gym opened in 1941. The gym included a stage and a band room. An east wing was added following a 1947 bond issue. The east wing contained classrooms, lockers, a lunch room and kitchen. Another building was added just south of the existing buildings in 1969. It contained a library and lunch rooms. Annex buildings were built to the west in the 1970’s. These annexes housed art classes, the woodshop, other vocational education, and band rehearsal space. The high school also housed junior high students during the 1970’s, when the 1910 building was demolished.

By the late 1980’s, only grades 9-12 attended the school. Parts of the building, including the teacher’s lounge, had been condemned. During this time, Palisade expanded its attendance area to include children from areas east of 32 Road in Clifton.

The class of 1990 was the last one to graduate from the old Palisade High School building. In 1991, a new school opened at 3679 G Road, on the site of what had been athletic fields. The old school continues to stand, and has been used for many purposes in the years since 1990, including a Mesa County Libraries branch. As of 2021, the building is slated to be torn down.
