In photographs that Trumbo showed to Sundal, the house was small, three-room home and had an east-west orientation. According to Elberta Francis, the home had been built on mud sills, and had a low front and back porch. It was later raised onto a higher foundation, and additions added to the front and rear of the home. Sundal maintained that the original home had been moved to the rear of the same lot and the orientation changed to north-south. The original home had a porch across the front where Trumbo slept in all weather. There were vacant lots nearby where the family grew vegetables.
