<marmot:placeNotes>According to local historian and professor Don MacKendrick, it was Grand Junction’s first performance and event space, founded in 1883 at what is presently 538 Main Street. Despite its name, it was not used for skating, but for dances, dramas, operettas, recitals, magicians, and pugilism.

According to pioneer lawyer Sam McMullin: “For entertaiment we had dancing at the old Rink. The dances were the old waltz and quadrilles, and Virginia reels. There were usually 36 dances on the program and ‘Home, Sweet Home’ came about daylight. For dance music, we had Long John Alpin with his fiddle, and someone on a kinky piano.”

It operated at least until 1892, when the Park Opera House was built.</marmot:placeNotes>
