<marmot:placeNotes>Also known as the East Creek Sawmill. According to Marie Ellen (Corn) Tipping, in the early 1880’s, a member of the Duckett family, who had previously owned a sawmill near Telluride, established a sawmill on Pinon Mesa. The sawmill was located on East Creek, on land later owned by Florenz Aubert.

Thad Duckett and Sarah (McCracken) Duckett moved from the Grand Valley to a ranch on Pinon Mesa sometime in 1888 or 1889. Thad assisted with the operation of the sawmill. The family purchase land on Pinon Mesa, placed it in the name of female members of the family, lived on the land, harvested the timber, and then ranched on the cleared land. Lumber at the sawmill was clean cut and shipped down Jacob’s Ladder on double-teamed log wagons. Lumber was sold to the F.E. Gowan Lumber Company. Sawmill buildings were sometimes on skids and moved to various locations. Two-man saws were used and energy for the sawmill probably was provided by a boiler. The sawmill was eventually sold, possibly to a Mr. Darling.</marmot:placeNotes>
