<marmot:placeNotes>According to Agnes and Jerome Kiefer, their great grandmother Caroline Kiefer and their Uncle Ben Kiefer homesteaded in the Redlands in the early 1900’s. On their proved-up claim was placed the first Redlands School. It was built in 1909 and was a wood building. They recall that some of the Kiefer’s land was located near the “Gunnison Bridge,” [Black Bridge], next to that of Charles Rump, who had settled in the Fisher area (across from the Black Bridge that connected the Redlands to Orchard Mesa). Jerome Kiefer recalls that the Kiefer land and the first Redlands School were located “close to where [Broadway] turns west after you get up on top of the hill there [on the rise into the Redlands after leaving Grand Junction]. On one of those mesas north of the road.” This would place the Kiefer’s land, and thus, the first Redlands School, somewhere near the Redlands Community Center (though it would have been somewhere on the opposite side of the road). The school was used until 1914, when the second Redlands School was built, this time at 2090 South Broadway.
