Vail Public Library Receives Award of Excellence: American Institute of Architects - American Library Association
Description
In July 1985, Snowdon & Hopkins architectural firm was collaboratively honored with an Award of Excellence by the American Institute of Architects and the American Association of Libraries.
Pam Hopkins and Craig Snowdon were young, creative architects when they designed Vail's first green building, the Vail Public Library (VPL). To earn the contract, Snowdon & Hopkins were declared winners of a timed architecture competition sponsored by the Vail Town Council.
Built in 1983, the library exhibits environmental-friendly innovations including a sod roof, natural climate control features, native plant landscape, and excellent natural light. At the time, the building had "the largest green roof west of the Mississippi." VPL was also the first known library to feature a fireplace and great room ambience. In addition, VPL Director, Charlyn Canada, and Architect Pam Hopkins carefully selected the timeless furnishings and art for the library.
Also involved in the award-winning design of Vail Public Library was David Nelson, an electrical contractor and lighting specialist, and Sherry Dorward, a landscape architect. Architect Pam Hopkins oversaw a 2007 renovation of the interior of Vail Public Library., Award of Excellence: American Institute of Architects and American Library Association
